When it comes to license requirements or application to international or advanced standing programs for foreign trained dentists, NBDE is by far considered the common denominator and the first step in this long process. Since NBDE is such an important step and because it should be among the very first ones on your list I thought I'll talk about NBDE first.
As of now the NBDE exam consists of two parts and it's administered by the ADA Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE). Part I of NBDE covers most aspects of the biomedical sciences while part II deals mostly with clinical dentistry issues.
NBDE Part I
It's extremely important that you carefully read and review the NBDE Part I Candidate Guide, you can download a copy of the guide here. The fee for the NBDE exam is $260. The following eligibility requirements for taking the NBDE exam apply to international dental graduates or foreign trained dentists, these requirements were adapted from the NBDE candidate guide (2008):
Most schools require foreign trained dentists to take NBDE part I and they do assign a certain weight in their acceptance decision on your score on that exam, some may also require part II.
The NBDE exam is administered only at Prometric test centers in the US and Canada, once you register you will receive information directing you on how to register for a certain date. At one point in time (when I took the test), the test was paper-based only, gosh, I feel so old!
According to the official candidate guide, the NBDE could take up to 7 hours, divided into 3.5 hours segments, 200 questions each, with an optional one hour break.
Part II
Again, your first step is to become familiar with everything listed in the NBDE Part II Candidate Guide which you can download here. The examination fee for part II is $340. You do not need a new ECE report if you have already taken care of this during Part I.
Part II is also computer-based, administered in Prometric, you can submit a paper application, or register online here. Many other regulations and procedures are similar to Part I. The only difference is the scope of the exam, NBDE Part II tackles the different dental specialties, patient management, and pharmacology.
The exam is administered in two days, day one consists of two 3.5 hours segments, 200 questions each, of discipline-based questions. Day two consists of 100 case-based questions. You will be given several cases with 10-15 questions each.
Preparation for the NBDE Exam:
Obviously, a strong and solid background is needed before you tackle any of these exams, being a foreign trained dentist gives you at least a theoretical advantage because chances are that you are familiar with at least some of the subject covered in the NBDE exam, that should be derived from your text books and lecture notes, that was certainly my case, but you may want to also supplement your preparation efforts with other educational aids, I've used some of the following, but not all, so I can't attest to how effective they are, but I know that the following teaching aids are being used by many foreign trained dentists and other international students in lots of different ways:
The NEW NBDE:
Effective January 2010 the JCNDE will start reporting performance in the NBDE exams as pass or fail only, and possibly administer a new version of this exam that basically combines both parts into one exam that is for the most part composed of clinical cases-specific questions.
There are couple of interesting issues that will arise because of this change, and those are mainly related to international dental graduates (foreign trained dentists). You see up until now we only needed to take part I and use that score to apply to schools that used to look at the score and make their acceptance vs. rejection based on that score and many other criteria. When the new exam is rolled, this will be impossible, since you need to be enrolled in a dental school before being allowed to take the exam, as you can see, the new format can't be used as an admission requirements since you can't even take the exam before being already accepted into school, and because standard scores cannot be reported anymore.
What could make this even more complicated is the fact that with the new format schools may feel obliged to add more biomedical sciences courses to the curriculum of the international programs to make sure their students are adequately prepared to pass the NBDE in its new comprehensive format, this could very well mean longer programs (more than two years), and higher tuition. So, if you are reading this now, and you're still thinking, my advice to you is to go ahead and take part I and secure that important step toward obtaining your license to practice dentistry here.
Good Luck !

Fees for ECE services will also be listed ($85 at the time this blog is published). You should indicate that a General Report should be sent directly to the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. It takes approximately four weeks for ECE to evaluate credentials. - Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. will send the ECE General Evaluation Report directly to a) you and b) the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (if it was requested by you on the ECE application).
- The Joint Commission will hold the NBDE examination application, but will not process it before the ECE Evaluation Report is received. The ECE report must be received in the Joint Commission office by the application deadline.
- Your name on the ECE report must match the name on the application. Any name changes must be accompanied by legal documentation.

- Released national board dental exams from previous years, can be a great resource, the more recent, the better, they can serve to familiarize you with the format of the exam, and you can use them to test yourself and your preparation, don't count too much on seeing the same questions though in your exam. You can purchase those directly from the American Student Dental Association. I encourage you to become a member of ASDA, foreign-trained dentists or international dental graduates who are not yet enrolled in a US dental school can join at the associate level, the dues are $53 and you get decent discounts on reprints of the released NBDE exams.
- First Aid for the NBDE Part I (First Aid) and First Aid for the NBDE Part II are both useful guides published by McGraw-Hill , with lots of good reviews, written by students who aced the National Dental Board Exams and reviewed by top dental school faculty and practitioners, include hundreds of high-yield facts and mnemonics to maximize study time, and test-taking strategies and advice.
- Another two books and useful guides published by Mosby are: Mosby's Review for the NBDE, Part I and Mosby's Review for the NBDE, Part II (Mosby's Review for the Nbde: Part 2 (National Board Dental Examination)). They also have very good reviews.
- Kaplan also publishes a review guide that is available for Part I only: dentEssentials: High-Yield NBDE Part I Review (Kaplan Dentessentials)
- Dental Decks: a flash card-based educational tool, could be very useful if you like that style of learning, you can check them out here. They can be somewhat pricey, so you may want to shop for them at other outlets or on eBay.
- Crack the NBDE for the National Board Dental Examination Part 1 (2008 Deluxe Edition): seems like a nice way to "simulate" the national board dental exams, both parts I and II. It's a computer software that you download. They have several packages to chose from.
- Kaplan provides several resources to prepare for the NBDE exam, they offer prep courses for both parts at their centers, those could be expensive, but may work well for you if you need a strong classroom-like refresher of your information. They also offer online programs which are basically question-banks with or without lecture notes. They vary in prices depending on how long you will use the service, more like a subscription-based system.
- The Student Doctor Network Forums provide a wealth of information about the NBDE and other issues relevant to foreign trained dentists or international dental graduates

Great effort sir ... i highly appreciate your help . thank you
Great work with the blog. It is very informative and helpful. I wanted to whether NBDE I is offered all year long. I mean after all the formalities, can we schedule an appointment for any working day or are there specific dates per year?
Thank you all for the nice comments. NBDE is offered all year round, it's a very convenient feature of the computerized format, compared to the old paper format that I had to go through back in 2002, long time ago!
HELLO SIR.....M A FINAL YEAR DENTAL STUDENT IN INDIA..I JUS WANTED TO KNOW HOW TO GET ENROLLED FOR THE NBDE EXAMS AND WAT ALL DATES ARE USUALLY AVAILABLE IN THE YEAR.UR BLOG IS VERY INFORMATIVE AND HAS HELPED A LOT THANKS....

Hello Dr. Tawfiq Alkilani:
Do you think any university will accept someone who scored 81 in the NBDE 1? It's better to retake it or go for NBDE 2?
Thanks for your post, they are very helpful.
Teru, it's hard to tell, I've heard about people getting accepted with 81, but not too many, if you have the time and the resources, may be you should consider improving your score by giving it another shot, this way you can improve your chances of acceptance.
Thank you Dr. Alkilani for your response. If it's posible can you tell me what universities look for? (besides high scores in NBDE)
Experience in your home country?
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !!
hi,dr.kilani
i am in second year in dentistry in egypt and want to take part1 of nbde in summer...is it hard to take the new nbde and the sources of study will change or what?i cannot understand the new nbde...
thank
Teru, sorry for the late response, other things schools look for are GPA, previous experience, research and publications, volunteer work, etc. Be creative, look back at the past few years of your life and see what happened and what you have learned, etc.
Mr lonely,
If you are referring to the new format that combines both parts I & II then you really need to be familiar with all aspects of both exams, it's not clear yet how the new format will look like, but it will still contain questions about most of the basic medical and dental sciences that are already part of parts I & II. I have listed a lot of good resources on this page, make sure you check them out, there is no substitute to one or two of the study guides mentioned above.
dear sir,the blog has been vry informative for me.i appreciate your help.i am a dentist from INDIA.i wanted to know whether we have to apply to the university prior to taking the NBDE or after i get my score.m plannig to give my exam by this year end to avoid the hassles of change in exam pattern from next year.do u think 8months are sufficient for doing well in exams?m also working(8 hrs daily).i have not given TOEFL.planning to give it in may
marzia, thanks for your nice comments about the blog. It's good that you are planning to take your NBDE before the change next year, you will need these scores though to apply to any school, and 8 months should be plenty, best of luck
hello dr,
my doubt is if i write my part1 in 2009 and not my part2 would i have to take the new format in 2010?i live in virginia, alexandria. may i know where your clinic is, may i do voluntary work in your clinic.
Hi Dr. Kilani.
Living in US and trying to become a dentist have become a real hassle. Thanks for the information you put on the web, I think many dentists or future dentists will be more convinced that it is possible to become a dentist in US. Dear doctor: my test is on july of 2009, and I wanted to know what is the best way to be constant and focused while studying? Thanks for your time.
Hello Sir,
First of all i must say the info here is v precise and helpful. It's great to know there are ppl who help others even when they doing well in the sys. I heard abt the changes in examination and selection criteria from 2010 & while i ws searching for it i came across ur blog. I want to know tht if i take part 1 in oct, will i be able to apply next year as i can't apply to schools this year or the exam taken this year wld be totally wasted as new sys wld be introduced next year. I am v confused abt this and i'd really appreciate if u can reply to my query...thanks for ur time.

Hello yasmin, I don't really know the answer to your question, it will depend on the requirements of the school you apply to, also if you only take part I and then the new format is instituted I assume you will have to take the new exam to fulfill license requirements. Transition is also a difficult time.
I work as an associate in Colonial Heights in Central Virginia.
Hello Pablo, I'm glad you find the information here useful. I want to wish you the best of luck in your coming test. The answer to your question varies from one person to another, we all have different ways of finding the right environment to help us focus while reading or studying. Some people benefit from studying in groups, others prefer more of an individual setting. Find out what works best for you. You will obviously want to eliminate any other distractions as much as possible and stick to the task at hand, which is your test.
Hello ping,
Thanks for the nice comments, as I answered yasmin in a previous entry, it's hard for me to tell, if you take part I but not part II, that first exam might just be useful to apply to schools, but then to apply for license you will need the "whole NBDE certificate" which effectively means you will have to take the new format exam. Also if the school or schools you are applying to do change their requirements then part I results will indeed be useless. So, it's hard to know for sure, you want to get in touch directly with the program coordinators, give them your approximate time line and see what they advise, they will know about upcoming changes in their own admission criteria, or at least have an idea about what will change soon.
Thanks for your prompt reply sir. Even if part 1 scores help to get into school tht'd be good enough, one can write the new format exam later...i think i'll write the exam this yr, it might help to get into school...let's see...thanks again for your reply.
Thanks a lot Dr. Alkilani for your blog. It’s very helpful ;)
I have some of questions for you:
1. My major problem now is the new NBED. I can’t apply for part 1 as I am not prepared enough. I’m a bit confused: should I keep waiting and preparing for the exam, or should I give up and look for somewhere else (UK seems way much easier)
If things change the way you suggested, I guess all universities will come up with their own exams so someone can get into FTD program in the first place… this will be extremely hard and expensive, both in time and money IMHO. Do you have any new info about this particular issue?
2. Financial Aid: I guess this is a big concern for all of us… most schools will cost + 100,000$ per year, which is quit hard to get if your living somewhere else than the US… (I live in the Dubai, and although my dad is doctor, 100 grand is still way too much!)
I keep hearing about loans and other stuff, but no direct links or trust worthy word… everybody I know speculates… especially in the current financial crisis…
Can you please tell us more info about this thing as well??
3. Visa: this may also be a problem, since I am from Syria, and right now Syrian government does not have the greatest relations with the US government.
Do you suggest coming first in visit visa, or in an invitation from a university or institute ( Kaplan for example)
I know I talk a lot, but you are the only one I could find that has up-to-date info about the NBED and related stuff…so please bear with me.
I really appreciate all your help
Obada
Hello Obada,
Let me try to answer your questions;
1. Everybody seems to have a problem with the new NBDE, although it's not here yet! I can't tell you what to do, but waiting too long is not a good idea, get part I underway, and then follow up with part II, you should not need more than 6 months to study and prepare for both, otherwise, you will have to wait until schools update their admission criteria to adapt the new reality, I have no solid information about how they will test applicants if NBDE is not available, that's why I always suggest going for the NBDE as soon as possible, so you can have that under your belt. Does that make sense?
2. Cost is always a concern, and it should be, most dental students rely significantly on student loans, government and/or private loans, if you are not a US citizen, nor a US permanent resident, then you can only apply for private loans, and you will need a US citizen or a US permanent resident to co-sign the loan with you, it's very rare for a US lender to accept a loan application from a foreigner without a co-signer from the US. I know it's tough, may be your dad can help? May be you can acquire financing from a local bank in your country?
3. Visa should be the least of your concerns, at least for now, when you are ready for the NBDE, you will apply for a B1/B2 visa at that time, give them the right paper work and cross your fingers and see what happens. You can only obtain a student visa after you get accepted into a school here.
I hope that was helpful :)
very sincere work you've done creating this blog.
I have a question regarding NDEB of Canada Vs. NDBE of the U.S.
Which do you see is better for the career?
because in Canada I'll have to take the Training program first then apply for the board exams which is the opposite in case of the U.S.
And do you have any idea how does the licesure process works in the Quebec
Thank you.
I haven't seen any post so sincere ..Thanks for that..
I've just finished my final yr n waiting for my results in India..
I'll have to join in 2011.. I dont think I can give it in a span of 3 months..I'll be going to the US only by Nov 2010..if the new NBDE pattern is going to be so complicated, will admissions be really difficult? are u sure that the admission will have to be secured before we give the exam?then what will be the criteria for admissions?
Will it be difficult to pay off the loans?
Thank you for all the information, it is truly helpfull.
I would like to know if there is any source with the comparative achievement in the NDBE 1 among dental schools?
Thank you,
Hello Dr Kilani,
Regards.
Thank you for all the efforts you made to provide such valuable informations to all the people like me and for being so kind n thoughtful.
I am Dr Chowdhury , Currently working in Doha ,Qatar as a Dentist since 2005.I graduated in 1998 from India and worked in India till 2005.I plan to come to Houston next year, 2010 along with my husband as he got a job.I am sure ,I have to start from scratch. Please guide me regarding what all I have to do in order to start working as a Dentist or Dental Hygienist in Houston.I am aware that NBDE exam pattern will be changed from 2010 onward..
Thank you.
Dr Chowdhury

sir,Very great and excellent information given by you is immense source on the changes being taken place in NBDE Exam. But,i am confused about my preparation for the 2010 exam. Whether i shall prepare on the basis of old pattern or prepare for both parts as i have no information on the future pattern of the exam. What will be the new criteria for the admission for the year 2010 in dental colleges for international students.kindly, advise your expertise and valueable suggestions.
Thank you for these words of advice. I have a question of my own... I am currently a dental student will graduate in year 2011.My university is not of strong foundation and i know i will have difficulty in taking the NBDE. It has been a major concern of mine and I want to know of any advice and if there is a chance of me passing the exam. thank u very much
Omaar,
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with licensure in Canada or their dental boards, sorry.
blessed,
I don't know if the admission process will be more difficult, it will be certainly different due to the fact that you can't take the NBDE until after you become a student.
As far as paying the loans, I don't know about any dentists who cannot pay back their loans, it's a lot of money, but dentists earn a lot of money too.
Carmen,
I don't know, but the source I would check is the join commission itself, they may have the answer:
The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations
211 East Chicago Avenue, Suite 600
Chicago , Illinois 60611-2678
800-232-1694
Rebecca, I'm afraid there will be certain vague areas when it comes to any possible new changes to admission policies of schools, so far I don't know of any school that released any new guidelines.
deepak, please read post above
yomama,
never give up hope, use as many resources as you think you need, check out some of the resources listed on this page.
Really a great help Sir..
I wish to take your opinion as I gave part 1 in Nov,09 my score is 81. Though my toefl is 115 and gpa is more than 3.5, Do i need to take part 1 again or should i apply straightaway for the 2011 admissions next year.
With thanks and regards
hello sir,
thank u so much for such useful information. i've been looking for it from so many days but wasnt gettin all of it at the same place. sir, i want to know that after one clears this exam , that dentist can practice there immiditely or have to study more or get some training afterwards...... i am in 3rd BDS so want to know how to prepare n lastly except the exam fee what are the other expences?
plz let me know , i'll be grateful to u .
Parul, 81 sounds like a relatively low score, but I heard about people who got in with similar scores, it will not hurt to try to apply to a few schools and see what happens, while at the same time study a little bit more just in case you decided to retake again.
swarnim, this exam is only the first step, depending on what state you are after, you will need to enroll in a US dental program, you need clinical exams etc, I suggest that you continue reading the other posts or head to http://www.foreigntraineddentists.net
The Joint Commission remains committed to the
implementation of pass/fail scoring for Part I and Part II as
well as for the Dental Hygiene examination. However, the
Joint Commission approved of a delay in the transition
from a reporting of numerical scores to a pass/fail
reporting system from January 1, 2010 to January 1, 2012.
The Joint Commission specified that individuals taking
the examination before January 1, 2012 will retain their
numerical scores.
The decision to delay implementation was made to allow
key stakeholders more time to prepare for the transition,
especially state boards that may need to amend their
practice acts.
Hi, i am wondering since Joint commission does not allow for retake of NBDE who pass it once effective Jan 2010. How would it impact the compitetion for foreign trained dentists to get in to the programs. my friend got score of 83 and she was planning to retake so as to improve it. do you think it is good or bad for candidates in her position in terms of getting admission since every body else would also be careful in terms of risking their existing score.
Hello sir. Im a student in 3rd year for stomatology in Albania. I wanted to ask some questions if its possible. first how to apply for NBDE and if that can be done before i finish graduation here.I really have more questions but id like to get throught you with emails. I will appriciate that. thank you
floriantivari@yahoo.com
hello sir, i gave my nbde 1 in 2003 n got average score of 82.... anatomy 79, dental anatomy 82, boichem / physio 85, micro/patho 83.... nbde 2 77......i had applied for couple of colleges then , but i didnt get thru, i want to reapply now again, i want to know if i am eligible to reapply with same scores or i have to retake part 1. your advice would be appreciated, thank you
Dear Dr. Kelani;
First I may congratulate you for achieving your goal; second I have to give you all the complements for your patience and selfless interest; and last but not least I'd like to ask you a few personal questions.(in which I'd appreciate if you'd respond me at: drbarros 2004@yahoo.com.
Regarding the new examination process; from what i read in this blog:"Joint Commission approved of a delay in the transition
from a reporting of numerical scores to a pass/fail
reporting system from January 1, 2010 to January 1, 2012" it seems that nothing has been changed yet. Is that correct? And if that's the case, does that also means that we can still retake the NDBE tests to improve our scores? Finally, what would be your personal recommendation package for preparing to take the NBDE I; considering the shortest period of time available and the most costly effective.
Thanks a million!... and
God bless you!
Fernanda
Hi, im a dentist from pakistan i graduated in 2008!
im planning to give my NBDE 1 in august 2010. my question is
1. shall i go ahead with it? because wat you mentioned in your blog, u said ' you cant unless you'v been admitted to a US dental school'?? i didnt understand that
Thank You

thank you
does anyone know what happens if you dont pass the NBDE part 1 the third time you take it?i know that you have to wait a year to retake, but does it affect you when you apply to collages as a foreign student?
sir thank u so much for the information u gave to us......wat i wanna know is in a year how frequent exams are there....i have been searchin for dates for the next exam which i cudn find at all...please help me with it
hi!, i am a qualified dentist in south africa. i have a question about the visa requirement. can i only apply for the visa as soon as i passed the NBDE part 1 and 2? i would really like to apply for it now, while im studying for the tests , because i gather that it takes a long time to get one!!!
Hi Dr. Tawfiq - my brother recently took the NBDE part one this year (2010) in April, and he hasn't gotten his results yet. Have you heard anything about results being delayed this year? Also is there a website, phone number where we can call and find out the status for NBDE results?
Thanks in anticipation for your response. I had some more questions, so if you can send me email at gurvinder@gmail.com that would be really appreciated, thanks Dr.
radhia, you can still take the exam as planned
Sir I enquired about the new NBDE exams we can only give it once but is it true if passed we can repeat the exam after 2 yrs or we cannot repeat it anytime? And also i have a permanent resident card so fees will be same for me as of the foriegn gradutes or any subsidy is there for greencard holders?
Hello, I'll be completing with my course in sept 2010, in India. I've a US multiple entry visa, can I give exam on that Visa or a student Visa is required?? Morever, Do I need to take both GRE and Toefl or only Toefl?? Thanks.
krupali, there are no such requirements, you can take the exam after you finish your BDS program.
antonio 1982, I don't think it will affect that, the school will get the final score card after you pass the exam, assuming that you don't apply until after you pass the exam
Rakish, there are no set dates, you can give an exam almost any day you decide to
Wim Jaco, what visa are you talking about? for a student visa, you will need to be accepted into a dental school before you can apply for one
This is a good site for information for dental apirants aiming for US.What I would like to know is -Are there two ways for getting liscence to practise in U.S?Like-1)Once PartI is given, is it mandatory to enroll in schools for one or two years and gain a degree and then appear for part two OR -2) partII can be given after partI and then there is a liscencure exmination adiitional to this to get qualified for liscence?

considering the new amendments does this mean that foreign students cannot practice without being enrolled in a US university, as they cant take the nbde without being enrolled in a US skul?
Hi. This is a great blog but I've heard (but not sure) that there have been recent changes whichmeans that the scores do not count anymore. I guess this is good news :) just a pass or fail
Im a Dentist in the UK and had a few questions that would help me and others here to:
1) Is the above statement true: Scores for the NBDE exams are no longer relevant??
2) After sending off info to ECE and passing NBDE 1 and 2, for how long is this valid for.
3) Any hints and tips for applying?? Is it easier or quicker in some UNIVERSITIES than others
4) While studying can we carryout simple dental procedures such as Teeth Whitening and scale/ polish for earning money on the side??
Your Feedback will be most appreciated. Please email

I am also undecided as to whether pursue applications to dental schools right now, as I'm always seeing empty dental clinics during weekdays and weekends. It's the very rare clinics that are doing well and right now though your post said we are doing well professionally I'm at crossroads and time is ticking by.
I have cleared both parts of the exams with 82 score each and a gpa of 3.6. Now I had cleared the part one in June 2010 and part two in June 2nd 2011.
All other requirements being met, I am really wondering if I can still apply and are results valid like they say they are for 10 years? Seems to me each university has checklists and most say within 3 years I hope this is not set in stone??
IF you let me know your perspective I can try again by applying for Kaplan practical classes in between my pregnancy so I can make the most of this time. I had given up but I don't want to let go, on so many opinions. I had none of my own and was easily swayed by talks and walking past clinics.
Meanwhile I had done dental lab technology but I wanted my own profession not constantly in prosthetics lab reminding me I can never be there.
Its more to do with me as a person and making my own decisions but I feel ready to have a chance at it...if only I know I still can?
Kind regards
Dr Shweta MG
